The notification of the Citizenship Amendment Rules 2024 by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday led to protests by around 55 students at Delhi University Arts Faculty on the following day.The implementation of the CAA 2019 by the Centre occurred on Monday, marking over four years since its passage by Parliament.
Today, the Delhi police detained numerous students who were participating in protests. According to students from Delhi University (DU), they were subjected to brutal attacks, manhandling, and detention by the authorities. In a video, one DU student claimed that girl students had their clothes lifted and torn, while boys were also violently assaulted before being taken away in separate buses.
Students associated with the Left-Affiliated AISA ( All India Students Association) organised a protest against the newly implemented CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act). According to Manik Gupta, the president of the AISA unit at Delhi University, the students were apprehended by the police prior to the commencement of the protest.
According to PTI, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) M K Meena stated ‘’Taking preventive measures, we have removed around 50 to 55 students from the Central Library Of Delhi University (opposite Arts Faculty) who were protesting against the CAA. They were removed from the location and they will be released soon”.
