Today, the Delhi police detained numerous students who were participating in protests. According to students from Delhi University (DU), they were subjected to brutal attacks, manhandling, and detention by the authorities. In a video, one DU student claimed that girl students had their clothes lifted and torn, while boys were also violently assaulted before being taken away in separate buses.
Students associated with the Left-Affiliated AISA ( All India Students Association) organised a protest against the newly implemented CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act). According to Manik Gupta, the president of the AISA unit at Delhi University, the students were apprehended by the police prior to the commencement of the protest.
According to PTI, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) M K Meena stated ‘’Taking preventive measures, we have removed around 50 to 55 students from the Central Library Of Delhi University (opposite Arts Faculty) who were protesting against the CAA. They were removed from the location and they will be released soon”.
What is AISA ?
AISA, known as the All India Students’ Association, represents the left-leaning student body in India and identifies as the advocate for the progressive student movement. It operates under the affiliation of the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation.
What is the idea behind CAA ?
Its main objective is to give citizenship to the target group of migrants who migrated from Muslim-majority countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan before December 31, 2014. The law has also cut the period of citizenship by naturalization from 11 years to five. Under the CAA Rules, immigrants from these countries are only supposed to prove the country of their origin, their religion, the date of their entry into India, and the knowledge of an Indian language to apply for Indian citizenship. It will benefit people of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, or Christian migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who entered India before December 31, 2014, and seek citizenship of India. This group of people has been living in India illegally or on long-term visas.
Back to the current situation, protests have also happened at other universities like Jamia Millia Islamia after the CAA implementation. Student outfits held a press conference at Jamia demanding the withdrawal of the Act and release of all students, who were booked in the anti-CAA protest nearly four years ago.
