Infrastructure is a basic need

Infrastructural problem

Delhi has touched 50 degrees Celsius in recent days and is a victim of heavy heat waves these days. Amid these heat waves, Delhi University’s student union is concerned about students’ health conditions. Very few colleges of north campuses are loaded with facilities for Air conditions. Also, amid the water crisis in Delhi, the accessibility of fresh drinking water for students seems to be very difficult. Also, on a similar line, there are many infrastructural problems the university faces that are problematic for students. Thus, DUSU decided to put their demands clearly in front of the administration to solve the required infrastructural facilities in the University. Setting up Water coolers was on the forefront.

DU’s stand

On May 30, Delhi University on Thursday said that 25 coolers would be installed in various spots on the premises to solve the ongoing water crisis amid heat waves in the city. The decision was taken in a meeting of Delhi University Students Union representatives and DU officials. A student delegation led by Aprajita met Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh to present a memorandum mentioning various campus-related demands. The memorandum demanded the urgent need for cold and clean drinking water, particularly in the faculty of Arts, Central Library and north campus hostels.

Other demands

However, along with the water availability, the memorandum also consisted of a lot of essential infrastructural reforms which are creating heavy problems for students amid these extreme heat conditions. The administration ensured that it would take the necessary steps to fulfil the required needs of students as soon as possible.

In a nutshell

Thus, we can conclude that being one of the most reputed universities in the world. DU is morally obligated to provide its students with the best infrastructural facilities. To execute quality education, one needs an environment where knowledge can be nourished. Thus, a quality infrastructure can be considered a fundamental need for students studying on campus or living in hostels. Otherwise, it will be tough for students to maintain good health conditions amid these heat waves.

As Open Book Examination for final year students are set to begin from July 10 and mock tests are being held, several students have considered to boycott their final year exams claiming that they are left with no other options.

Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) so far has not released any opinion but suggest that evaluation must be done on the basis of their previous performance and assignments, as been done for the students of intermediate years.

DUSU President Akshit Dahiya on Monday, held a meeting with representatives from various colleges and decided that exams in current times are not feasible. “DU completely failed to hold mock test & online exam will be blunder too. We demand promotion for all DU students,” he tweeted.

Former DUSU President Arun Hood from NSUI in protest, has returned his LLB degree to Dean of Examinations, Vinay Gupta.

Over 80 students from Shri Ram College of Commerce have filled a google form to boycott the exams, accusing the technical glitches they faced during the mock tests.

So far Dean of Examinations Vinay Gupta has not addressed the problems the students faced during the mock tests sessions.

Delhi University Student’s Union (DUSU) has demanded special package from the Delhi Chief Ministe (CM), Arvind Kejriwal. Additionally, the package is for the benefit of students. Furthermore, they desire policies so as to ease things for students living as tenants in the city.

DUSU expressed concern regarding payment of rent. DUSU along with 128 other college reprensentatives have asked the CM to intervene in the matter. Moreover, they have brought into picture the plight of students living as paying guests (PG) or in rented flats. The PG’s still demand rent despite announcements made by the government. Such students are asked either to pay the rent or else they will have to vacant the same. This is happening amidst the lockdown. Most of these students are in their hometown as of now. Yet they are asked to take their belongings and leave.

DUSU has asked the CM to release policies to make it easy for such students by writing the letter to the Chief Minister. The same was issued by DUSU on June 4. Furthermore, a special package was demanded for such students as concession. And this money should be directly transferred to their accounts.

Akshat Dahiya, the President of DUSU also expressed his concern regarding the same. He stated, ” Since DUSU is a student-friendly and responsible platorm, it is our duty to provide relief to students”. He further added, ” DUSU has asked the government to intervene in the matter. We have further appealed the state government to provide with financial package. We are looking forward to the decision of the Chief Minister.”

The Student Tenants’ Union, Delhi had earlier brought attention to this issue. The same conducted a survey, which mentioned around 1069 students living as tenants in the city. Out of this 69.3 per cent reported being forced to pay rent during lockdown.

The Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) has demanded an end to the “forced rent extraction from coronavirus pandemic-stricken students” on Friday, May 22, 2020.

The Students’ Union received multiple requests for help from the students, who were being coerced by owners of their paying guest facilities. Following these requests, DUSU office-bearers appealed to owners to stop harassing and badgering into the lives of student tenants for rent and ensure the safety of their belongings.

The union further appealed to all flat landlords and PG owners to “refrain from such high-handed demands and involuntary extraction of monthly rentals.” Pradeep Tanwar, Vice-President of Delhi University Students’ Union, said, “We held multiple conversations with the PG and flat owners of Kamala Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, and other areas where a sizeable proportion of Delhi University’s day scholars reside. We have sized up the matter and are continuously monitoring the situation. We will not allow any forced extraction of rent from the pandemic-stricken students. We will also make sure that the belongings of students, who left the national capital in haste, are also well taken care of by the owners of the rented accommodations,” the Hindu reported.

Earlier, on this issue, after students have complained that they are being threatened to pay rent even during the lockdown when they are not staying there, the Student Tenants’ Union Delhi (STUD), a student-led group formed for and by students living in rented accommodations in Delhi, also called for an online protest on Twitter on May 19 with hashtags #NoRentFromStudents and #NoIncomeNoRent.
