Delhi University Publishes Undergraduate Academic Calendar

On Tuesday, Delhi University released its academic calendar for undergraduate programmes. Classes are expected to be initiated on August 1, 2024. This time we have a delayed academic calendar due to a delay in results of CUET UG results. Miranda House Professor Abha Dev Habib said, “Thanks to the NTA [National Testing Agency], admissions to DU’s undergraduate programmes are nowhere in sight.”

As per the new academic calendar, classes for the new session will continue till 27th October. Then we have a mid-semester break from 27th October to 3rd November. Thereafter classes will again resume from 4th November to 28th November thereby dispersal of classes for practical exams and preparation for semester exams. The theory exam shall begin from 10th December 2024 to 29th December. After the end-of-semester exam, we can observe a winter break till 1st January.

After the end of the respective semester, the new semester will start from 2nd January 2024. Thereafter we have a mid-semester break from 9th March to 16th March. Then from 17th March 2024 classes will again resume similarly till 30th of April. Then we will have semester breaks as preparation leave and for the conduction of practical exams. The theory examination will begin on 13th May 2025 and will continue till 1st June. This will mark the completion of the year following which we will have a semester break till the 20th of July

Comparative view

This time in comparison to the previous academic calendar, we can find more rigor. Last year it started from 17th of August thus comparatively we are sooner. However, we can observe that minimal days have been provided as semester breaks.  Students who will get admitted to DU this year shall be the ones who will pursue their education through the new education policy. This means a multi-disciplinary approach will be followed. However, it can be observed that the implications of courses of SEC and VAC are not working from the grassroots level. Therefore we also need reforms here

Thus in a nutshell we can conclude that after the extension of summer vacations by Delhi University, we can observe a rigorous academic calendar this year. Therefore students will be required to maintain continuity in their academics to deal with this calendar.

AISA protests against Paper leaks!

Over the constant paper leaks of top examinations in India, the All India Students Association(AISA)led a protest at the North campus of Delhi. Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan was about to attend the Yoga Day ceremony which was scheduled for 6 am. Du Officials mentioned that he could not attend the ceremony due to some ‘urgent work’.

However, AISA claims that the education minister could not attend the ceremony due to apprehension of protests going on. The enragement is due to Constant allegations of paper leaks in examinations of NEET, and UGC NET. This has sheened the entire student community with apprehension of irregularities in the institutions.

Although the minister had accepted the moral responsibility for the irregularities. They promised to set up a committee to have reforms in NTA proceedings. However, such matters as paper leaks can’t be drowned in a pit.

All the activists were holding black flags demonstrating against the paper leaks in top examinations of India. “In response to the sheer audacity of Pradhan to even think of coming to DU while he and his NTA have jeopardized the future of students, AISA activists along with students at Delhi University raised black flags and protested against his presence in the university,” the association said in a statement.

The engagement was up to the extent that students were demanding the resignation of the minister

In a nutshell, we can conclude that this humongous amount of engagement can be seen because of the tradition of paper leaks. This ended up with protests when the most reputed examinations such as NEET, and NET examinations were victims of institutional failures. Such progression is havoc for students, especially in a scenario where it takes years of preparation to crack such examinations. In a nation where the Supreme Court questioned the ‘sanctity’ of the examination. It is plausible to argue that we must take special steps to deal with such problems.

NET Cancellation: Students are enraged!

On 19th June 2024, the Ministry of education declared that the UGC NET Exam that was conducted on 18th June 2024 shall be cancelled. It clarified that speculations are there regarding the integrity of the exam which could have been  compromised. Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan ensured that there were some security breaches in some regions. Those who are involved in this case will be punished. This matter has been reported to the CBI (central bureau of investigation) and there are allegations of paper leaks in these cases.

This is after the alleged NEET paper leak scam that this big decision has been taken. This has a lot of ramifications involved in the case. A high-level committee has been established to probe into the matter. The Minister admitted that the investigation revealed that the question paper was leaked ‘in the darknet’ and added that the question paper that was circulated on the social media platform, Telegram, matched with the original question paper.

Situation

A total of 9,08,580 students appeared on Tuesday (June 18) Which was held for Junior research fellowship, appointment as Assistant professor and admission to Ph.D.

On 19th June 2024, the University Grants Commission (UGC) received certain inputs from the National Cyber Crime Threat Analytics Unit of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs on the Examination. These inputs prima facie indicate that the integrity of the aforesaid examination may have been compromised

Thus, it is a very unfortunate situation in the case where the future of a lakh students is at stake. It is high time that the stakeholders and authorities take viable actions to prevent such paper leaks scam to have a level playing field in the examination. Compromising the sanctity of the examination is something of a serious issue that requires urgent limelight. Students are demanding strict actions regarding the same.

The University of Delhi (DU) has proudly announced the selection of 140 outstanding students for its prestigious Vice Chancellor Internship Scheme (VCIS) for the 2024-2025 academic session. This initiative, designed to provide students with practical experience and enhance their academic journey, is set to run from June to July 2024.

Financial Support and Flexible Commitment

Each intern selected for the VCIS will receive a stipend of Rs 10,500, providing financial support while they gain valuable work experience. The internship requires a commitment of 20 hours per week, offering flexibility to balance academic responsibilities with professional development. Upon successful completion, interns will be awarded a certificate from the Dean of Students’ Welfare, adding a significant credential to their academic profiles.

The selection process for this internship was rigorous and competitive. The Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) office meticulously reviewed applications and conducted group discussions (GDs) from May 13 to 15. The eligibility criteria were stringent, with only those students who achieved a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) of 8.18 or above in their last semester exam being considered for the group discussions. Out of the 1,542 students who met this benchmark and were invited for the GD, the final selection saw 140 students being chosen for the internship.

The VCIS is part of DU’s broader strategy to foster a culture of experiential learning and professional readiness among its students. Interns will be placed in various departments and projects within the university, where they will work closely with faculty members and administrative officials. This hands-on experience is expected to provide insights into university operations, research projects, and administrative functions, thereby broadening the interns’ understanding and skills.

Encouragement for Future Applicants

Students who were not selected for the internship are encouraged to apply for other opportunities and to continue striving for academic and extracurricular excellence. The university aims to expand the VCIS and similar programs in the coming years to accommodate more students and provide even more enriching experiences.

A Stepping Stone to Success

As the 140 selected interns prepare to embark on their new roles, the University of Delhi stands proud of its commitment to nurturing talent and providing pathways to success for its students. The VCIS is not just an internship; it is a stepping stone towards a promising future for these young scholars.
